we're all in the mood... for beards!

Whenever you get a chance to be part of hirsute history, you grab it with both hands, just like Grant Hackett on a plane with a skin full.

As part of their Farewell Tour, much loved champions of the facially follicled, The Beards graced a Western Sydney faithful with one last performance before signing off, saying sayonara, selling the farm, riding off into the sunset...

We set out to make that send off their biggest yet by organising some posters to be pasted up around Western Sydney targeting Penrith, Windsor, Richmond, Rouse Hill, Blacktown, Parramatta and Castle Hill. We also arranged some peer-to-peer activity, got the good folks at the Penrith Press, The Western Weekender and The Brag to chat with the band and write about it.

We also took to the digital realm and snagged secret access to your computers (stalking) with strategically targeted social media ads (marketing). The boys were gracious enough to help us undertake a user generated competition to win a once in a lifetime experience to meet the band and be taken through a grooming master class. We received a multitude of bearded men (and women!) showing us their pics and seriously increasing our reach.

Go a little Green with envy

CMS added image

No need to be the same vintage as the white clad folks at the local bowlo, to recall the equally fierce competition that took place off the immaculately groomed greens. The rejuvenation of the humble bowling club became the new battleground for filtered food porn celebrity, curated Facebook fame and a share of Syd city's calorie count.

Among these was the 125 yr old Norths Bowling Club, now known as The Greens, North Sydney. Perched on top of the hill next to North Sydney Oval, we're pretty sure the name has something to do with the fact that the place is surrounded by it's namesake: ovals, parks, trees.

The only thing not particularly green are the kitchen brigade who have injected a measured amount of modern into the food, with suckling pig terrine and house smoked trout salad sitting comfortably next to pan roasted sirloin and fish and chips. So long sliced mystery meat in bain maries.

While the vibrant, manicured greens are still regularly patrolled by rollers who take it seriously enough to keep their shoes on, getting people outside of the APIA Insurance mailing list meant a similar refresh on the entertainment front.

What to do with a lush, city oasis location with carpet like grass that requires more maintenance than Rupert Murdoch's ex-wives? Hello Flicks at The Greens.

A month long open air cinema with a program of classics, cults and currents including Trainwreck, Dirty Dancing, Jurassic Park and Inside Out was rolled out, and finished off with bean bags, popcorn and choc tops.

Flicks highlighted the unique experience The Greens can offer: fresh, seasonal dining and full bar amenities, footsteps away from movies in the moonlight with a harbour backdrop.

Press play on the clip below and go a little green with envy.

(spoiler alert, The Greens is a client of Musicland)

guide or playlist?

Without getting into who made number one? Was it 'surprising'? Why is [Insert media outlet's name] calling the list 'alternative'? Did someone just call The Rubens Rock'n'Roll? That was the percentage represented by females/Hottest 100 virgins/animal names(?)?

CMS added imageWe are asking: Is the Hottest 100 the dummies guide to Australian Music?

With the month of January comes the increase in people asking where are the best spots to take in the Hottest 100. I don't know about the rest of you but I don't usually plan my day around places to listen to Chet Faker whine about how cheap talking is. It seems though, that the majority of Australia's youth do confine their day - and their Spotify playlist - to a strict list of artists and tracks (fingers crossed there's at least one album in it's entirety) pushed by the station without really enjoying the exploration of music. Is this the reason for the increase in people who attend shows for 'that one song' whilst catching up on why Jimmy isn't ready to commit during the rest of the set?

Or does it offer a platform for people to further their music knowledge?

Am I just whining and does it actually supply a list with which to seek out amazing artists who most people otherwise wouldn't have heard, are people using this as a starting point? Australian music is put at the forefront, which can never be a bad thing, and though it sways more to one side there is an example of most genres on show.

Sadly, the Hottest 100 list is very much a reflection of the j's most played tracks, let's just try to not make it a one-stop shop.

For this writer's opinion on the top 10, please refer to Steve Kilbey's 'curmudgeonly' thoughts…

Hip Hop Choir: Musicland Case Study

Hip Hop Choir

How can we help?

Curate a Christmas experience with a twist to promote Central Park as a destination and the centre's live entertainment program.

What did we do?

Musicland curated a Hip Hop choir to perform in-centre during the Christmas period as well as feature in a media tour to spread some Christmas cheer.

Tasked with warming up crowds for the arrival of Christmas's biggest headliner, much loved festive favourites were infused with some soulful, hip-hop and harmony rich swagger by the Hip Hop choir, ensuring Central Park was overflowing with feel good for the Christmas period.

Featuring former X-Factor personalities Mike Champion and Young Men Society (YMS); Nate, Tamati, Josh Fonmoa, Andy Tiomuara and John "Yoji" Benjamin, Christmas has rarely sounded smoother.

With boyish good looks, a poetic mind and a voice to dim the lights, crooner Mike Champion is a born performer with a well-earned reputation as a charismatic crowd pleaser. This singer, songwriter's presence electrifies a room. Coupled with his magnetic charm and sweet sounding, silky vocal, this Champion wins you over every time.

Since breaking out on X-Factor YMS have gone on to support the likes of Reese Mastin and Justice Crew. Since releasing their debut single in 2012, this all singing, all dancing trio continue to deliver their sweet soul, finger snapping grooves and infectious electronic sounds.

In addition to performing in-centre, the Hip Hop Choir also featured on a media tour where they caroled their way through the offices of Cleo and Dolly magazines amongst others, leaving a trail of Christmas spirit in their wake.

Wrap it up

Hip Hop Choir

With the aim of promoting both Central Park a shopping and dining destination, as well as the centre's live entertainment program, the Hip Hop choir re-working of familiar Christmas songs with a fun and urban twist added value to the centre experience as well as reinforced Central Park's position within the market place.

With its inner-city location and youth orientated offering, the concept reflected a youthful and contemporary direction in keeping with the centre's positioning, while providing a fresh and bespoke take on a Christmas promotion that engaged its target demographic.
